Single-Run Scores Are Fiction

Here is an experiment we ran while building Beamsight: the same panel of buyer questions, on the same brand, three times in one day. The mention rate came back 90%, then 75%, then 88%. Same brand. Same day. Same questions.

This is not a bug in our system — it is the nature of the medium. Independent researchers found that the odds of two identical prompts returning the same list of recommendations are under 1 in 100, and the same list in the same order roughly 1 in 1,000 (SparkToro's Gumshoe study, ~3,000 runs). Their conclusion was blunt: any product selling "AI rank movement" from single runs is selling noise.

If a tool — ours included — ever shows you a single number from a single run and calls it your score, treat it the way you would treat a poll of one voter. The number is not wrong, exactly. It is just not measurement yet.

What to Measure Instead: Mention Rate Over a Panel

The honest unit of AI visibility is mention frequency across many answers, not position in one answer.

The method we settled on, and recommend even if you never use our tool:

1. Build a fixed panel of unbranded buyer questions. Not "what is [YourBrand]" — the AI will flatter you. Ask what a real customer asks: "best CRM for a 15-person nonprofit," "which dental marketing agency should I hire." Being named in those answers is what winning looks like. 10–15 questions covering recommendation and comparison intents is a workable panel.

2. Ask every question on every platform, and count mentions. "Named in 26 of 40 answers" is a number you can defend to anyone — a client, a boss, a skeptic with ChatGPT open on their phone. A composite "score of 67" is not.

3. Keep the receipts. Store every raw AI answer behind every number. Clients will spot-check you live on calls — the same question, typed into ChatGPT in front of you. When your report contains the full answers it was computed from, that moment builds trust instead of destroying it.

4. Read trends and gaps, not absolutes. A single measurement locates you roughly. What compounds is the trend across weeks and the gap against named competitors — relative position is far more stable than absolute numbers, and it is what decisions should hang on.

The Models Disagree With Each Other — Measure All of Them

A pattern we see constantly in our own data: a brand mentioned in 80% of ChatGPT answers and 30% of Claude answers for the same questions. Practitioners who audit across platforms report that the overlap in cited sources between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini can run as low as ~14% for the same queries.

The practical consequence: optimizing for the model your founder happens to use means flying blind on the others. Any serious measurement covers at least ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini — and reports them separately, because a platform-specific gap is a platform-specific to-do list, not a rounding error.

Where Answers Actually Come From

When AI assistants ground their answers in the web (Perplexity always, others increasingly), the cited sources concentrate heavily. In category after category we measure, a small set of third-party sites — community threads, comparison posts, industry directories and review sites — accounts for most of what gets cited. Rarely is it the brand's own site.

This is the most actionable finding in AI visibility work: the lever is usually not your website, it is your presence on the handful of sources the models already trust in your category. A measurement report that lists those cited sources hands you the work plan directly. (It is also why the boring advice — consistent entity info everywhere, real presence in the communities your buyers read — keeps beating clever "AI optimization" tricks.)

The Honest Denominator

Two numbers to keep any AI visibility conversation grounded. First: adoption is real and steep — 45% of consumers used AI for local business recommendations in 2026, up from 6% a year earlier (BrightLocal), and half of B2B software buyers start vendor research in a chatbot (G2). Second: AI assistants still drive a fraction of one percent of overall web traffic and referred calls today (Ahrefs; CallRail's 20M-lead analysis).

Both are true at once. AI visibility in 2026 is a leading-indicator investment: the discovery behavior is moving years ahead of the traffic statistics, concentrated in exactly the high-consideration decisions — software, legal, healthcare, agencies — where a single influenced buyer is worth the entire program. Sell it, buy it, and report it as that. Anyone promising immediate traffic transformation from GEO is reading the adoption curve as a revenue curve. They are different curves.

The Client-Reporting Checklist

If you report AI visibility to clients (or to your own leadership), a checklist that keeps you honest:

• Lead with mention rate on unbranded questions — "named in X of N answers" — never a proprietary composite score alone • Show share of voice against named competitors — relative position is the trustworthy signal • Attach the receipts — the actual AI answers, available for any number in the report • Report per platform — the models disagree; averages hide the actionable gaps • Disclose the variance — state that single runs wobble and trends are the signal; your credibility survives the client's own spot-check because you said it first • List the cited sources — turn measurement into a work plan • Never promise traffic — promise presence in the answers buyers are increasingly reading

This is the methodology behind every Beamsight report, and it is free to adopt with or without us. The field will earn trust with disclosed methods and reproducible numbers, or it will burn out as another over-promised marketing category. We would rather it be the former.
